Summer Loving

Summer has arrived in all of her sunshine glory. Whilst it’s verging on the hot side (this may be the understatement of the year, but we resist the British urge to complain about the heat), we love the summer activities that these warm months bring along with them. From barbecues with friends, to hazy days spent in our local parks, to evenings with a glass of wine in one hand and a good summer novel in the other... summertime is the definition of bliss. We thought we’d mull upon some of our favourite sunshine activities, in a bid to be thankful for all that the season brings with her and as inspiration for those looking to make the most of these oh-so-glorious days

Let’s start with our favourite... Oh we do like to be beside the seaside! Before winding her way up in Bedford, épanoui founder, Hannah, grew up in Kent. The Kent coast, dappled with its beautiful seaside towns, therefore has a very special place in her heart. Her perfect summer day out is to Whitstable to spend the day by the seaside. Hannah’s top tips are to head for a beer at The Old Neptune, a pub that is actually on the beach and endearingly known by friends as ‘The Neppy’. A trip to the seaside is simply not complete without indulging in fish and chips, preferably eaten whilst perched on wall looking out to sea – whichever seaside town you head to this summer, we’re convinced that this is the most quintessential British summer activity of all time!

Beaches not for you? Perhaps a day spent wandering lavender fields might be more appealing. We recently went to Hitchin Lavender, the lavender fields in the neighbouring town of Hitchin. Not only is this place probably the most Instagram-worthy location we’ve been too, but you’ll leave with your own hand-picked bunch of lavender to dry at home. We’ve popped ours into a beautiful Dassie vase for ultimate effect. We in fact loved this experience so much that we visited the Hop Shop in Kent too....

Summertime for us is, without doubt, best spent outdoors. We love to make use of our gardens and local parks, and to take strolls down by the beautiful Bedford Embankment. Our gardens are really our haven. Some of our favourite garden activities include:

  • DIY outdoor cinemas (GREAT fun for all the family)
  • alfresco dining (a summer must)
  • sitting out with a good book and good wine (Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams is going to be top of our summer reads and we love to head to Blue Glass for good wine).

We also love to make the most of our vibrant town’s summer festivals and events that bring our public spaces and places to life. Next up on our calendar is the Bedford Park Concerts taking place this weekend (we’re a bit excited for the line up!). You’ll also spot us perusing the work of local creatives and makers at the next Bedford Flea and indulging in some Shakespeare at the Pavilion in the Park's Playhouse.

All in all, it may be hot, but summertime – we love you.
